Marsh’s has been in Dorset for as long as anyone can remember. The business was started by Harry and Edward (Ted) Marsh in 1930 in Sturminster Newton selling cars, bicycles, electric lighting, electric bells, gramophones, wireless receivers as well as charging batteries. The Company Motto back then was “Marsh’s for Quick Service” and to this day the Company still maintains this basic principle coupled with a focus on customer service, hence the current Maxim:
“For Service Beyond the Sale”
Ted’s son Richard (Dick) Marsh worked in the business all his life: from manning public address equipment at local events and village hall dances, to working and serving in the shop. In 1993 Dick’s daughter: Sarah Palmer joined the Company, followed by her husband Ross Palmer in 2005 and they continue the strong focus and tradition of providing excellent customer service coupled with competitive pricing.
Marsh’s is one of the longest standing members of Euronics which is the largest electrical buying group for independent retailers within Europe, thus ensuring prices and products for customers remain very competitive.
The company is still family owned and run and in April 2001 with the business prospering, a second shop was opened in Cheap Street, Sherborne.
Sarah and Ross Palmer the current owner’s state,
“we are friendly, knowledgeable and personable to all our customers, which is important in an ever changing environment. The electrical market in particular, is a difficult specialisation as the products and installations are always changing so we are constantly training our staff to be up to date with the latest product and service incarnations, this means we are supporting our customers with the latest product information available as well as keeping them abreast as to the market trends……… Our staff, stay with us for many years (we have a combined 250 years worth of knowledge!) so you are guaranteed a friendly face and any problems, which may arise, are dealt with as efficiently and effectively as possible, hence our adage: “For Service Beyond The Sale”.
So next time an electrical appliance breaks down in your house why not pop into Marsh’s and be amazed at the competitive prices and experience the excellent service first hand.
Our staff and values are Marsh’s greatest assets. Our people strive to make a difference with every product and service we offer and we believe these values help us attract and keep the most talented employees.
We credit our strength and endurance to a consistent approach to managing our business, and to the character of our people. We put the needs and well-being of the customers we serve first. We also ensure we have ethical and moral responsibilities to our employees as well as to the communities in which we live and work. This is our blueprint for long-term growth and sustainability that’s as relevant today, as it was 80 years ago. We focus on the fundamentals of our business and manage with future generations in mind.
We work with hundreds of manufactures and distributors – many who are big blue chip organisations, such as:
- Panasonic, founded in 1918 who are one of the largest electronic product manufacturers in the world
- Bosch, founded in 1886 who are a leading global supplier of household appliances and services
- Miele, founded in 1899 who manufacture high quality domestic and commercial appliances and are still family owned
Whilst these type of company’s provide world class products, we at Marsh’s maintain our agility due to our locality, focus and size. These large companies know that their success depends on anticipating customers’ needs and delivering meaningful, high-quality products, while our people at Marsh’s operate in a small-company setting but have access to the know-how and resources of these multi-national organisations – It’s like having dozens of strategic partners at our fingertips.
Our company has experienced growth for over 80 years and have grown through outstanding customer service, whilst offering impartial advice and a wide choice of innovative electrical products at a price that is hard to beat – it’s this complete service and focus which makes a difference to our customers.
